Angry mob has reportedly lynched a man suspected to be kidnapper or bandit in Tafa local government area of Niger state after he was found in possession of three Ak 47 riffles and 104 ammunition having been involved in an accident.
The man was said to be riding on a motorcycle with another man, apparently his accomplice , before the accident happened around Boyi Sarki /Toll gate area of Tafa.
It was gathered that the second man on the motorcycle died on the spot and that while the police were taking with survival of the lone accident to the hospital, the crowd at the scene became violent, seized the victim from the police and lynched him.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the incident in Minna, adding that the state Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abdullahi Elleman has condemned the jungle justice by the mob and ordered investigation, arrest of the perpetrators.
The PPRO confirmed that the accident occurred on February 17, 2026 at about 9.50pm, adding that two unidentified persons were coming from Tafa area of Kaduna State, heading towards Abuja axis before running into road construction/diversion barrier.
“The police patrol team moved to the scene, while some other persons also rushed to the accident scene to assist. On getting to the location, a sack was recovered from the accident victims, and when searched, three AK-47 rifles with six magazines and 104 ammunition were found in the bag belonging to the accident victims (suspects)”, he said.
According to him, “Unfortunately, one of the accident victims died on the spot, and during an effort to rescue the second person from the scene to the hospital, he was lynched by the mob to death. The corpses were moved to the general hospital morgue in Suleja”.
While condemning the mob action, the Niger state Commissioner of Police said that the suspect would have helped the Police to ascertain the source of the rifle and unravel their aim and warned that people should stop resorting to self-help approach.
“The Commissioner has directed Area Commander Suleja to commence a thorough investigation and ensure arrest of the perpetrators while the rifles are under ballistic analysis for further investigation”, he said.
