Liverpool staged a stunning comeback to beat Villarreal 4-3 after recovering from a two-goal deficit in a seven-goal UEFA Champions League thriller at Anfield.

Villarreal took a commanding 2-0 lead in the first half, but Liverpool fought back to secure victory in a pulsating encounter.

Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring for the visitors in the fourth minute before Santi Cardona doubled their advantage in the 29th minute.

Liverpool responded six minutes before half-time when Alexis Mac Allister converted a move created by Kostas Tsimikas to reduce the deficit.

The hosts drew level in first-half stoppage time after Ronald Araújo turned the ball into his own net in the 45th minute plus two.

The equaliser revived Liverpool’s hopes as both sides headed into the break at 2-2.

Liverpool returned for the second half with renewed determination and took the lead for the first time in the 65th minute through Mac Allister, who finished a chance created by Rio Ngumoha.

Florian Wirtz extended the hosts’ advantage four minutes later, converting a move set up by Cody Gakpo to make it 4-2.

Villarreal, however, refused to surrender and reduced the deficit in the 87th minute through T. Oluwaseyi, who finished a chance created by A. Pérez.

The late goal set up a tense finish, but Liverpool held firm to claim all three points.

The victory highlighted Liverpool’s attacking resilience and ability to recover under pressure after a difficult opening spell.

For Villarreal, the defeat was a bitter disappointment after surrendering a two-goal advantage that had put them in a strong position to secure a positive result.

The seven-goal contest provided an entertaining spectacle in the Champions League league phase, with Liverpool’s second-half response proving decisive.
