Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder, John Mikel Obi, has called on his former club to make a decisive move for Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen.
Obi enthusiastically expressed that the Nigerian forward might just be the key to unlocking the Blues’ potential for Premier League success.
Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, the 2012 UEFA Champions League winner revealed he has been actively encouraging Osimhen to join the West London club, describing the 25-year-old as a lifelong Chelsea supporter with the potential to follow in the footsteps of club legend Didier Drogba.
“I’m still trying to get him to come to the club,” Mikel said.
“I’m trying to press my buttons and see if we can get things done – hopefully, we never know.”
Osimhen, currently on loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray from Napoli, has been in fine form, and Mikel believes the striker could transform Chelsea into genuine title contenders.
“It would be a great shame if we didn’t get this player,” Mikel added.
“He’s been a Chelsea fan since childhood. His idol is Didier Drogba – he’ll want to break records, win titles, and take us back to the top.”
Mikel, who lifted the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria, believes the club hierarchy must act swiftly if they wish to secure the signature of the Napoli loanee.
“If Chelsea decide not to invest in him – fine, good luck. But we could literally pick up the phone and get him in. We should,” he said.
Chelsea, currently fourth in the Premier League table, are battling for a UEFA Champions League qualification spot – a marked improvement from last season’s disappointing campaign. Despite their inconsistency, Mikel remains confident that the addition of a top-class striker like Osimhen could reignite the club’s ambitions.
