    Breaking: Boat capsizes in Niger, many feared dead

    Tragedy on Saturday occurred in Shiroro local government area of Niger state following a boat mishap in which many are feared dead.
    The Niger State Emergency Management Agency NSEMA has confirmed the incident saying the casualty figures are not yet ascertained.
    The incident was said to have occurred at about 11:45pm Saturday morning in Gunu while the boat was heading to Kwaita Zumba market loaded with communities and unspecified numbers of passengers mostly traders.
    Nsema, in a statement its  Director of information and special Duties, Ibrahim Hussaini explained that rescue efforts have been deployed to the scene of the accident.
    He said, “NSEMA has received a report of a boat mishap incident which occurred today, 26th July 2025, around 11 :45am when a Boat loaded with Commodities and unspecified number of passengers heading to Kwata, Zumba Market, capsized along with its occupants”.
    He said that the driver and few  passengers were rescued, adding that, “one of them has been admitted in General Hospital Kuta and he is currently recieving treatment”.
    According to him, “at the time of filling this report, number of Casualties could not be confirmed as search and rescue operation is still on going by NSEMA desk officers, local divers and Volunteers”.
