    COP29: Niger, Gamany firm sign N1trn carbon market deal

    Niger State Government has signed an agreement with a German management consulting firm, to activate the carbon market potentials of the State and assist it to achieve its objective of attracting one trillion naira in resources and investments.

    The Chief Press Secretary Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger state, Bologi Ibrahim stated this Thursday in a press statement.

    He explained that the agreement was signed on the sideline of the Nigeria Day at the United Nation Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

    According to him, “Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, who led the Niger State delegation, signed the agreement on behalf of the State with the Minister of Environment, Alh. Balarabe Abbas, his counterparts in the Regional Development, and Power Ministries as witnesses”.

    “According to the agreement, the German management consulting firm is expected to help Niger State to build its technical capacity, develop Institutional and regulatory frameworks”, he explained.

    He said that the agreement would also grow carbon registry and establish global partnerships on carbon market activities.

    He said that the Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balarabe Abbas who was excited with the development, called on other sub-nationals to emulate Niger State approach and ensure collaboration with the Ministry and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC).

    He quoted the Minister as saying that the collaboration would help the sub-nationals develop the necessary tools, data and technical capacity to use Article 6 carbon markets, adding that, ” this is strategically aligned with the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) implementation target and long-term goal of the Paris Agreement.
