APC opens door as Kano governor Abba Yusuf defects to APC

The All Progressives Congress has said it is open to receiving any Nigerian willing to join the party but will not speculate on who may defect next.

The party spoke on Monday following the reported defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to the APC earlier in the day.

NEXTER learnt that Yusuf resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, the platform on which he won the governorship election, last Friday.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the party remained welcoming but avoided conjecture.

“We are open to receiving any Nigerian who wishes to join our party, but we don’t speculate as to who may come next.

“As many as come, we have room to welcome them into our party.”

Morka dismissed claims that the APC was luring opposition governors with incentives, insisting that recent defections were voluntary.

He said “Look, listen, nobody is baiting anyone. These men, eminent leaders in our country who are joining our party, do so on their own volition.

“No one is baiting anyone. So I can’t tell you where the baits are, because that’s not happening.

He described Kano as one of Nigeria’s most important states, noting that Yusuf’s reported decision to join the APC was taken independently.

“For a governor in Kano to decide to join our party, you can’t speak of dates. He made that decision on his own, voluntarily,” Morka said.

When asked to assess President Bola Tinubu’s performance since assuming office, the APC spokesman said the administration had recorded significant progress.

“This President has been remarkably successful, even under three years of this administration,” he said.

He acknowledged that the government’s early policy decisions were difficult but argued that reforms were already yielding results.

“Two years on, we’ve seen those reforms bear fruit. Things are changing. The economy of two years ago is not the economy of today,” he said.

According to him, governors joining the APC were aligning themselves with what he described as the President’s success story and vision for a resurgent Nigeria.

“These are men who, on their own, have decided to come over to our party,” Morka added.
