The Alago Youth of Agwatashi Community, Obi Local Government Area (LGA), Nasarawa State, has accused the Tiv people in the area of economic sabotage.

This is contained in a statement signed by Samuel Iyima and Yakubu Ahmed Anohoni, Chairman and Secretary of Alago Youth in the area and made available to journalists on Sunday in Lafia.

The leaders explained that historically, their people welcomed the Tiv people and gave them land to stay and carry out farming activities, but wondered why they had decided to be hostile toward the Alagos.

They explained that the Tiv people had banned their kingsmen from going to the popular Agwatashi market, and instead opened a different market at the Agon community, very close to the present market.

The two leaders added that the Tiv people are also mounting weekly roadblocks every Thursday to prevent their kingsmen from attending Agwatashi market.

The duo said that the Alago people are peaceful and committed to maintaining a cordial relationship with the Tiv and other ethnic groups in the area in the interest of the overall development of the state and county.

They appealed to the state government to intervene to prevent the situation from degenerating into a crisis in the area.

The youth leaders had also appreciated Umar Abubakar-Apeshi, Osoho of Olosoho, Traditional ruler of Agwatashi, for the way he has handled the issue so far.

“The royal father has always appealed to our people to be peaceful and not take the laws into our hands,” they added.
