Gun shots, explosion mar Rivers LGA election

    NEXTER News

Sporadic shooting at Rumuepirikom community, the home of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, on Saturday prevented many eligible voters in the area from coming out to cast their votes during the local government election.

Reports claimed that gunmen arrived the ward in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, in two unmarked hilux vans shooting sporadically into the air at the time the electoral officers were preparing for the exercise.

Many voters who had come out early to perform their civic responsibilities ran from the polling units.

Ealier, suspected arsonists had detonated explosives at the state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The explosion, it was gathered, damaged the main gate and the security post of the APC secretariat and some parts of the building.

The factional caretaker committee chairman of the party in the state, Mr. Tony Okocha accused supporters of the Rivers state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for the attack on the secretariat.

“At the wee hours of Saturday, pro-Fubara civilian soldiers detonated dynamites at our office. The second attempt to set it ablaze was foiled as the security at the gate quickly put out the fire,” he alleged in a message obtained by journalists in Port Harcourt.
