    Mokwa flood: Group awards scholarship to 88 children, 41 widows

    * Urges FG to redeem N2bn pledge

    Not fewer than 88 children affected by the recent Mokwa flood disaster have been granted scholarship to secondary school level of education while 41 widows are to benefit from skill acquisition training.
    The Chairman of the Mokwa Flood Relief Support Group Ahmed Nasir, stated this while issuing cheques and school materials to beneficiaries at Beyge primary school Mokwa on Thursday
    He said, “The group has also issued cheques to some training institutes for the skill acquisition training of 41 widows and children on Tailoring, Catering as well as Soap Making”, adding that the gesture is aimed at alleviating the suffering of the survivors of the flood .
    Nasir, a retired Assistant Controller General of Customs Rtd,(ACGC), explained that since the Flood wrecked havoc on Mokwa community,children of the victims have been dropped out from school while widows couldn’t take care of their immediate family.
    According to him, ” the Mokwa flood disaster reief group is comprised of sons and daughters of Mokwa, adding that cash  donations were made  by their friends across the country.
    He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to redeem the earlier pledge of N2 billion naira, construction of resettlement as well as provision of 15 MVA transformer made through the Vice-president, Senator Kashim Shettima when he visited Mokwa to commiserate with the victims.
    He however lauded Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago of Niger state for providing cash to majority of victims to seek for alternative shelter pending the completion of resettlement, adding that “we  are overwhelmed by the gesture”.
    In his remarks, the Ndalele  of Mokwa, Alhaji Muhammadu Shaba  Aliyu, expressed delight over the unwavering support from the indigents of Mokwa, saying that the support would go along way to uplift the livelihoods of flood victims who have been devastated as a result of the flood.
    The traditional leader also appealed to the federal government to as a matter of urgency redeem all it’s earlier pledges.
