An Islamic school in Abuja, At-Tarbiyyah ‘STEM School has won two international competitions in entrepreneurship and Science, Technology, Engineering with Math mathematics (STEM).
This was disclosed by the school’s Director, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Abubakar, who said the school came out first in a regional competition and won five trophies and also won an international contest, coming out for, second and third positions in three categories, which earned the school an additional six trophies.
The director further revealed that the school came first in a STEM competition, which he said was international, noting that the school’s team that came first will represent Nigeria in Vietnam, while the school’s team that came third will also represent the country in Cyprus.
Hajiya Amina disclosed the cheerful news during a funfair organized by the school for parents, staff and students to celebrate the school’s victory at the National Children’s Park and Zoo in Abuja, where she advocated for stronger emphasis on science, technology, engineering and mathematics in Nigerian schools to transform the country from an import dependant economy into a manufacturing and innovative drive nation.
She condemned the manner in which the country’s education system places much emphasis on theory rather than hands-on skills to foster creativity, innovations and self reliance amongst youths.
According to her, the youths will avoid crime if they are equipped with employable skills to empower them.
