    By Abubakar Ojima-ojo

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has commissioned four transmission substations in Kano State, adding 544 megawatts (MW) of wheeling capacity to strengthen electricity supply to industrial, commercial and residential areas.

The Federal Ministry of Power disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, saying the projects were delivered in partnership with the Kano State Government.

The substations are located in Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi.

According to the ministry, the projects are expected to ease pressure on overloaded substations, improve bulk electricity transmission and accommodate previously unmet power demand across the state.

The development is also expected to support industrial production, small businesses and household electricity supply.

Under the projects, Walalambe received an 80MVA substation equipped with two 40MVA transformers, while Kumbotso was upgraded with a 300MVA facility at the 330-kilovolt level and 100MVA transformers.

Dakata and Dan-Agundi each received an additional 100MVA transformer at the 132kV level.

The ministry said the new infrastructure at Walalambe included six outgoing feeders designed to improve electricity supply to key industrial and residential areas.

“At Walalambe, six outgoing feeders support supply to Tokarawa Industrial Area, the Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and adjoining communities,” the statement said.

It added that the projects had already restored grid connectivity to a major industrial company that had operated independently of the national grid for decades.

“Lee Group, a major industrial enterprise, is now reconnected to the grid after more than 30 years of operating off-grid,” the ministry said.

The statement also disclosed that the fire-damaged Dan-Agundi substation had regained substantial capacity, improving its ability to serve Kano’s ancient town, the Emir’s Palace and surrounding communities.

The ministry said the investments would provide stronger electricity infrastructure for manufacturing, small businesses and employment generation, while improving household welfare.

It added that reliable electricity transmission was essential to expanding economic activities and supporting businesses that depend on stable power supply.

The projects were described as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen the power sector.

The ministry said the administration was committed to making infrastructure investments deliver tangible economic benefits across the country.

The commissioning comes amid continuing efforts to address Nigeria’s electricity challenges, with transmission infrastructure remaining a critical link between power generation and distribution to consumers.

However, the impact of the new substations on consumers will depend on effective transmission, adequate generation and distribution capacity, as well as the reliability of electricity supply across the state.
