The #EndSARS memorial protesters earlier arrested by the police at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos, have been released.
The 22 arrested protesters were reportedly released following outrage by civil society and human rights organizations, including Amnesty International as well as prominent Nigerians.
The protesters had gathered Sunday morning to mark the 4th anniversary of the #EndSARS protests, which demanded an end to police brutality in Nigeria when they were arrested.
The list of arrested protesters includes notable activists such as Hassan Taiwo Soweto, Ilesanmi Kehinde, Uadiale Kingsley, Osopale Adeseye T., among others.
Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), spokesman’s, Hassan Taiwo Soweto, confirmed the release of the protesters to journalists in Lagos.
“We have just been released after the Commissioner of Police came down to the Panti police station pleading hypocritically. The whole brutalisation, assault, and arrest happened in his presence,” he said.
