On October 1, 1996, the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, created Nasarawa State out of Plateau State, fulfilling the yearnings of the people for self-determination and accelerated development. Today, as the “Home of Solid Minerals” clocks 29, it is fitting to reflect on the milestones achieved across successive administrations and the journey toward building a prosperous, modern state.

At inception, Nasarawa was largely rural, underdeveloped, and lacking in critical infrastructure. Lafia, the state capital, was little more than a provincial town, while most local governments struggled with basic amenities. However, over the past 29 years, successive administrations have laid bricks of progress, each contributing to the growth of the state in its unique way.

The pioneer administration under Wing Commander Abdullahi Ibrahim (1996–1998) laid the foundation of governance by establishing key ministries, agencies, and institutions that provided the framework for Nasarawa’s takeoff. He set the tone for subsequent leaders to consolidate. As well as Col. Bala Mohammed Mande from 1998 to 1999 also contributed to the foundation framework to the takeoff of the state .

The return of democracy in 1999 ushered in the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Adamu (1999–2007) whose two terms provided stability and direction. His government focused on infrastructure, education, health, and rural development, leaving enduring legacies such as the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and a stronger foundation for governance.

His successor, Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma (2007–2011) consolidated these gains with his 13 points agenda. He invested in agriculture (Badakoshi), rural electrification, and social services, though his tenure was cut short after a single term.

The administration of Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura (2011–2019) came at a time of financial and security challenges. Yet, he carved a niche by emphasizing urban renewal, infrastructure modernization, and fiscal prudence. His legacy is visible in road networks, improved healthcare facilities, and the transformation of Lafia into a befitting state capital.

The current administration of Engineer Abdullahi A. Sule (2019–present) has taken the baton with a clear vision of industrialization, youth empowerment, and sustainable development. His government has deepened investments in solid minerals, agriculture, human capital development, power, and technology while positioning Nasarawa as an investment friendly hub. Other initiatives like the Nasarawa Technology Village, renewable energy projects, and the push for industrial parks highlight his forward-looking agenda.

As Nasarawa celebrates 29 years, its story is one of resilience and steady transformation. From a modest beginning, the state has grown into a promising hub of opportunities, attracting both local and foreign investors.

Looking ahead, the task before government and citizens alike is to deepen unity, harness the state’s vast mineral and agricultural resources, and ensure that development translates into better living standards for the people.

At 29, Nasarawa is not just celebrating the passage of time; it reaffirms its place as a state with enormous potential. With visionary leadership, collective responsibility, and sustained commitment, the dream of a prosperous Nasarawa.

Also, it’s evident that the state has made remarkable progres, and especially under Governor Abdullahi Sule’s leadership. With a focus on infrastructure development, economic transformation, agricultural advancements, and human capital development, Nasarawa State is poised for continued growth and development. The future looks bright for this vibrant state, and its citizens have much to celebrate.

Happy 29th Anniversary to Nasarawa State. From humble beginnings to a thriving hub of opportunities, the state has come a long way since its creation on October 1, 1996. With visionary leadership and collective responsibility, Nasarawa continues to harness its vast resources, driving growth and development.

From the forgoing, one can deduce some key highlights of Nasarawa’s journey so far, including not being limited to infrastructure development. Significant investments in road networks, including the Lafia flyover and underpass and dualization of major roads in the State

Economic Transformation, Establishment of industrial parks, lithium processing factories, and agro-allied industries, positioning Nasarawa as a key player in Nigeria’s industrial landscape.

Agricultural Advancements. Initiatives to boost productivity and food security, including subsidized fertilizers, farm settlements, and rural infrastructure development.

Human Capital Development. Focus on education, healthcare, and skills acquisition, with notable projects like the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, and vocational training institutes, as well as other programs.

As Nasarawa State looks to the future, its citizens can celebrate the progress made so far and look forward to continued growth and development under the visionary leadership of our amiable Governor Engr. Abdullahi A Sule, Nasarawa is changing with the new trends of business hub and transformation.
