Yul Edochie, the Nollywood actor, has revealed that he met May, his embattled first wife, while both were writing their WAEC GCE examinations.
The general certificate of education (GCE) is an entry qualification for universities typically taken by students between 16 and 18 years old.
In a yet-to-be-released episode of the Honest Bunch podcast, the actor recounted that they got married when he was just 22 years old.
“We got married when I was 22. I think we met at the same centre when we were writing WAEC GCE,” he said.
The actor brought the revelation to light while sharing his views on marriage dynamics.
He argued that married men are meant to “set boundaries” for their wives and advised that men should not give their wives too much liberty, calling it “foolishness”.
“You cannot be a fool for a woman. You must set boundaries. To be a fool is to accept anything she does,” he said.
May had previously revealed that she met Yul while studying for the GCE in Enugu.
“We met way back in school, when I went to the East for my university. We didn’t attend the same school. I went to Enugu State University of Science and Technology, while he went to UNIPORT,” she had said.
“But we met in Enugu. We didn’t meet at a party because I was never the party type, I was a bookworm. We met at the GCE centre.
“We were kids when we met. We were teenagers. I can’t remember how old we were when we met, I have to count backwards or something.”
Edochie has remained a polarising public figure since April 2022, when he introduced Judy Austin as his second wife and announced they had a child together.
The revelation drew widespread criticism, particularly from May. In August 2023, May filed for divorce and demanded N100 million in damages.
