The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Katsina State, Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita, has demanded an immediate investigation into the hospitalisation of 65 students of Government Science Secondary School, GSSS, Batagarawa.
Kaita made the demand on Monday while sympathising with the affected students, their parents and the Batagarawa community over what he described as a catastrophic health incident.
The students reportedly developed complications on Sunday after they were administered drugs for bilharzia, also known as schistosomiasis.
A report by Daily Trust on Monday, quoting the State Commissioner for Education, confirmed the incident and said the 65 students were responding to treatment.
Reacting to the development, Kaita said 65 was too large a number to ignore, especially after a video clip trending on social media showed some of the victims struggling for survival.
He said the incident should not only be condemned but thoroughly investigated to bring all those culpable to book.
In a statement signed by his campaign spokesman, Abubakar Ahmed, the ADC candidate said: “Sixty five is certainly too big a number to ignore over what seemed to be a fatal healthcare issue. A video clip trending on social media platforms showed some of the victims struggling for survival and cannot be overlooked but condemned in totality.”
Kaita also called on the state government to extend the investigation to other schools and communities, particularly in rural areas, where similar drugs may have been administered, to avert further harm.
He prayed for the quick recovery of the affected students.
